Sheila Mulligan, the winner of the Carl’s Door Service second annual “Carl’s Messiest Garage Contest,” is a firm believer that persistence pays off. After entering—and failing to win–the 2014 contest, she entered again in 2015, and this time walked away with a brand new Clopay garage door professionally installed by Carl’s Door Service on Thursday, September 3.

Organized by Carl’s to coincide with National Garage Door Safety Month in June, the contest focuses on making the inside of a garage less hazardous by organizing items, prioritizing preventative garage door repair and removing clutter. Professional organizing firm Sappari Solutions and junk hauling and removing company BumbleJunk once again partnered with Carl’s as co-sponsors of the event. Sappari Solutions provided four hours of organizing support in August to help Mulligan organize her garage, and BumbleJunk hauled away the unwanted items. That cleared the way for Carl’s Door Service to come out and measure for an upgraded new Clopay door.

Mulligan is a veteran who lives with and cares for her elderly mother. To enter the contest, she posted pictures of her messy garage on the Carl’s Door Service Facebook page and submitted a written summary of why her garage needed the makeover.  Her winning entry was inspired by the song “Message in A Bottle” by The Police, and read in part,

Just drowning in clutter, can no longer see the floor;

My garage has immobilized me, I can’t get out the door.

More junk and mess than anyone could bear, rescue me before I fall into despair!

I’ll send an SOG (Save Our Garage) to Carl’s, I’ll send an SOG to Carl’s;

I hope that someone gets my

I hope that someone gets my

message in an e-mail…

“When I found out I won, I literally cried,” she says. “I simply could not set aside the time and energy needed to clean out this space, so winning this contest was an amazing gift. I can now enter the garage safely–without worrying about something falling on me–plus find what I need when I need it. And every time I look out of the window and see the new garage door, I smile. It has improved the look and value of our home and I know the contents of the garage are much more secure, too.”

Mulligan adds, “I can’t say enough about the professional service of the Carl’s technicians. Within two hours they had my old garage door off and the new one installed, plus a garage door opener up and working.  This was no small feat as the old door required special handling due to lead paint, and we had never had an opener before! Thank you for this wonderful opportunity. I am grateful beyond words.”

Carl’s Door Service, Inc.’s office manager Deb Eilbacher says, “We were very impressed by Sheila’s entry and were happy to reward her diligence in entering the Messiest Garage contest again. Carl’s Door Service, Inc. is committed to providing our customers with the safest, most attractive garage door solutions available, so we were glad to install a new garage door and opener to help protect her family and add beauty to her home. We hope that this fun contest also helps to build awareness about the importance of safety inside and out of the garage.”
