Harford Community College inducted nine members into SALUTE National Honor Society on May 8 in a ceremony in the College’s Student Center. This was the inaugural induction ceremony for the Harford Community College chapter. SALUTE is the first national academic honor society established for student veterans and active military in two-year and four-year colleges and universities.

The ceremony included a welcome from Barbara Travers, Coordinator for Military and Veterans Services. Following the national anthem, Robert Brown, Chair of the Harford County Commission on Veterans Affairs, led the “Pledge of Allegiance.” Dr. Theresa B. Felder, President of Harford Community College, and Terry Trouyet, Coordinator, WHFC Radio Station, gave opening remarks. Karis Rempel, Financial Aid Associate of the College’s APG Center, discussed the history and values of the SALUTE National Honor Society. William Montgomery, adjunct instructor, host of WHFC SITREP and retired combat veteran, administered the SALUTE oath.

2024 SALUTE inductees include Ryan Brown (U.S. Army, Veteran), who is majoring in Information Assurance & Cybersecurity; Angel Carrion (U.S. Army, Veteran), who is majoring in Information Assurance & Cybersecurity; Rodney Carter (U.S. Coast Guard, Retired), who is majoring in History; Logan Davis (U.S. Marine Corps, Veteran), who is majoring in Information Technology & Cybersecurity; Terrence Gibson (U.S. Army, Retired), who is majoring in Business Management; Mary Heath (U.S. Navy, Veteran), who is majoring in Paralegal – Legal Studies; Alfredo Lepe (Air National Guard, Active Duty, Deployed), who is majoring in General Studies; Patton Ligon (U.S. Marine Corps, Veteran), who is majoring in Information Assurance & Cybersecurity; and Lakisha Smith (Army National Guard, Active Guard Reserve), who is majoring in Nursing.

To be considered for induction into the SALUTE Honor Society, a student veteran or active military member must be an undergraduate who has earned a minimum 3.00 GPA and completed 12 credit hours. Each chapter symbolizes the commitment as a group to recognize and honor the service and the scholastic achievements of active military and veteran students. Barbara Travers, Coordinator, APG and Veterans Services of the APG Center, is the SALUTE advisor.

SALUTE was formed in 2009 by the Colorado State University Veterans Office with a Success for Veterans grant funded by the American Council of Education and the Walmart Foundation.
