About the Artist:

Andrea Sauer’s artistic journey is a vibrant tapestry woven from decades of exploration, learning, and a profound understanding of color and composition. Her refusal to be confined to any single style has allowed her to flourish across various painting methods, continually embracing new media and techniques with an insatiable curiosity and zest for growth.

Her watercolors are a celebration of boldness, both in structure and palette, with lush and often unexpected colors that draw the eye and stir the soul. Andrea’s canvases are diverse, capturing the serene beauty of still life, the innocence of children, the tranquility of landscapes, and the profound depths of her internal landscape.

A distinctive feature of Andrea’s work is the compelling push-pull relationship between the foreground and background. She crafts realistic images that stand in dramatic contrast to abstract patterns formed by the organic shapes of wet-on-wet paint. This technique not only challenges the viewer’s perception but also invites them into a deeper dialogue with the artwork.

In her recent creations, Andrea has been weaving her love of handmade marbled paper and mushroom spore prints into her paintings, infusing them with rich textures and a robust sense of design. These elements are not mere embellishments but integral parts of a narrative that each piece tells.

Beyond the canvas, Andrea’s work extends into the realm of healing. With a deep understanding of how trauma is held somatically within the body, she has pioneered classes that empower individuals to use art as a tool for personal insight and healing. These “medicine paintings” are not just art; they are journeys of self-discovery and recovery, reflecting Andrea’s own path as much as those of her students.

A proud alumna of the Maryland Institute, College of Art, Andrea holds both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in her craft. Her work has graced the halls of prestigious societies and exhibitions, from the Baltimore Watercolor Society to the American Watercolor Society, and has been internationally recognized, including a notable selection by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art as one of the top emerging artists in the U.S.

Andrea’s art has transcended borders, being featured in the Tajikistan Embassy through the Art In Embassies Program, and her accolades include exhibitions at the National Arts Club and the Philadelphia Watercolor Society.

Residing in Bel Air, Maryland, Andrea’s life is as full and rich as her art, shared with her husband, children, and the joyful companionship of three dogs. As we spotlight Andrea Sauer as our Artist of the Week, we invite you to experience the profound and healing beauty of her work, a true embodiment of art’s power to touch lives and transform spaces.
