Harford Mutual Insurance announces that Tia Timpson, Accounting Assistant, was named “Employee of the Year” by the Harford County Commission for Disabilities to commemorate National Disability Employment Awareness Month. This award is given to an individual with a disability who is a resident of Harford County and/or employed in Harford County and has exhibited exceptional ability and determination in entering or re-entering the workforce.
Timpson suffered a massive stroke in her sophomore year at North Carolina University-Greenville. The stroke left her a hemiplegic, losing her ability to walk or stand and severely compromising her speech. After undergoing extensive therapy and unable to return to campus, Tia completed her degree online earning her Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration. A former intern with Harford Mutual during her junior and senior year at Edgewood High School, Tia was hired into an open position in the Finance Department.
Timpson lends her story about stroke, survival and disabilities as a Graduate Speaker for Edgewood H.S. Academy of Finance; a National Ambassador for the American Heart Association; and an Ambassador to the National Stroke Association. She was also Crowned Miss Women’s Challenge in 2013 by the nonprofit organization Women’s Challenge, Inc.
