Animal Shelters Nationwide Teaming Up with NBC for Annual Pet Adoption Campaign to Find Homes for Thousands of Animals

With a shelter full of dogs, cats, rabbits and other animals, the Humane Society of Harford County (HSHC) is waiving adoption fees on all pets between Thursday, August 24 and Sunday, August 27 as part of the 9th annual Clear The Shelters nationwide pet adoption event.

“About 2,500 animals enter our shelter every year,” said Bob Citrullo, executive director. “For the first half of this year, we’ve taken in 143 more dogs and 147 more cats than the same period last year, and we’ve come uncomfortably close several times to running out of kennel space. Clear The Shelters could not come at a better time, and we are excited to welcome everyone to the shelter for this fun and important event!”

Since its 2015 inception, Clear The Shelters has helped more than 860,000 pets find new homes. The 2022 campaign established a new single-year record with more than 161,000 adoptions, while also raising more than $540,000. Nearly 1,400 animal shelters and rescues covering all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and Guam participated in last year’s campaign.

Teacup was adopted by Erika Glodek and family during the 2022 Clear the Shelters event held at the Humane Society of Harford County.

“We are proud that Clear The Shelters supports the many outstanding shelters and rescues in our communities that perform the vital work of caring for vulnerable animals,” said Meredith McGinn, NBCUniversal Local’s Executive Vice President of Diginets & Original Production. “We are very excited for the campaign’s return this August to help them find new homes for animals in need and raise more money to fund their efforts.”

During the 4-day mega adoption event, HSHC will be open on Thursday and Friday from 11AM-6PM, Saturday from 10AM-5PM, and Sunday from 11AM-4PM.

“Every adopter will receive a bag of goodies including coupons, freebies, and information to help ease the pet’s transition from shelter to home,” Citrullo added. “Our team is very excited to welcome visitors to the shelter, introduce them to our animals, and help them take home their next new family member.”

Animals adopted from HSHC are spayed or neutered prior to adoption and also include all appropriate vaccinations and testing for communicable diseases, de-wormer, flea & tick preventative, a microchip, a free sample bag of pet food, and a general exam.
