The Actors Guild of Harford Community College will present Next to Normal, a musical drama, on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, May 4, 5 & 6 at 8 PM and Sunday, May 7 at 3 PM in the Blackbox Theater located in Joppa Hall on Harford’s campus.

Next to Normal explores how one suburban household copes with crisis and mental illness. Winner of three 2009 Tony Awards, including Best Musical Score and the 2010 Pulitzer Prize, Next to Normal was also chosen as “one of the year’s ten best shows” by critics around the country, including The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, Rolling Stone and The New York Times.

Dad’s an architect; Mom rushes to pack lunches and pour cereal; their daughter and son are bright, wise-cracking teens, appearing to be a typical American family. And yet their lives are anything but normal in light of the mother’s 16-year battle with manic depression. Next to Normal takes audiences into the minds and hearts of each character, presenting their family’s story with love, sympathy and heart.

This deeply moving piece of theatre explores emotional dramatic material and showcases performers’ vocal talents with an energetic pop/rock score. Next to Normal addresses such issues as grieving a loss, ethics in modern psychiatry, and suburban life. The show is presented by Special Arrangement with Music Theater International.

Tickets are $10-$15. Purchase tickets here. Harford Community College is committed to promoting the full participation of all individuals with disabilities at the event. For disability-related accommodations, call 443-412-2211 at least two weeks in advance.
