The Actors Guild of Harford Community College will present Oedipus Rex Friday and Saturday, November 11, 12, 18, and 19, at 8 PM and Sunday, November 13 and 20, at 3 PM in the Chesapeake Theater on campus.

The story involves Oedipus, the King of Thebes, who believes he has escaped the terrible prophecy that has pursued him all his life. He defeated the riddling Sphinx, saved the seven-gated city of Thebes, married the queen Jocasta, and had four children. They rule in peace.

But a mysterious plague has recently afflicted the city, bringing death to the people, livestock, and crops. An Oracle reveals it as punishment for the murderer of the previous king Laius remaining free. Oedipus vows to find this criminal and save his people once again, no matter where he may hide. In so doing, he is forced to unravel the mystery of his own cursed existence, resulting in a shocking ending.

This greatest of ancient tragedies, in a fully accessible and modern translation by Oliver A. Evans, shines a light on timeless questions of identity, fate, free will, and leadership.
