Harford County government has installed electronic lockers as an alternative to in-person document exchanges at its administrative office in Bel Air. In the wake of COVID-19, the county has encouraged contactless options for doing business.
The smart lockers accept documents of all sizes, ranging from large plats to permit applications to deed payments. An electronic screen provides easy-to-follow instructions and county staff are notified within 10 minutes by email when a deposit is made.
When documents are available for citizens to pick up, staff place them in a locker and an automated email is sent with a personalized PIN code for the intended recipient to gain access.
The lockers are in the lobby at 220 S. Main Street and accessible during normal business hours, 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday – Friday.
The new system is available for secure transactions involving the Harford County departments of treasury, procurement, planning & zoning, and inspections, licenses & permits.
First-time users are encouraged to contact the respective department for additional instructions. Contact information is on the county government website, www.harfordcountymd.gov.
In-person and online options continue to be available for most transactions.
Harford County has used the smart lockers for more than 2,000 transactions since they were installed in May.
“Smart lockers are more secure than open drop-off boxes and safer than in-person document exchanges,” County Executive Barry Glassman said. “Best of all they’re making it easier to do business with Harford County government.”
