This spring, Harford Community College will begin offering a new Culinary Arts certificate in which students will learn culinary skills to prepare them for employment in this high demand field.
Harford’s Culinary Arts Certificate is designed to prepare students for entry- to mid-level positions in the hospitality industry. Employers are seeking well-trained culinarians for openings in restaurants, country clubs, medical and educational facilities, catering operations, travel and tourist locations, and more. Students will gain essential skills in classical cooking and baking in a hands-on format in a large culinary kitchen located on Harford’s campus. Additional theory and fundamental standards required by industry employers will be included. Students will also complete a Hospitality Career Professional course, which introduces them to skills needed to apply for and obtain employment.
The six courses required for the certificate include Culinary Fundamentals I, Sanitation and Safety, Culinary Math, Culinary Fundamentals II, Hospitality Career Development, and Culinary Nutrition.
Upon completion of the certificate, students will have earned three industry-recognized certifications from the National Restaurant Association: ServSafe® Food Handler; Manager; and Allergen Awareness. These certifications are required by most employers in the industry. The College’s program is accredited by the National Restaurant Association.
