In this episode, Rich and cohost Sherri Cook Woosley have a conversation with Mary Hastler.

Mary Hastler is the Chief Executive Officer of Harford County Public Library in Maryland.  Before being appointed CEO in 2010, she was the Associate Director at Harford County Public Library and prior to that she was the Associate Director for Support Services at Baltimore County Public Library, which included her work as the Project Director for Storyville, an award-winning interactive early literacy center. Ms. Hastler is a Past-President of the Maryland Association of Public Library Administrators and Past President of the Maryland Library Association.  In 2018, Ms. Hastler received the Maryland Library Association Outstanding Member Award for her leadership in supporting library development, funding, services, customers and staff at the local, state and national level. The award also recognizes an individual with personal characteristics that make the recipient an inspirational role model for the diverse MLA membership.  Ms. Hastler received the Icon Award 2018 from The Daily Record and was recognized by The Daily Record as an Influential Marylander 2019 and 2017, and a 2017, 2015 and 2013 Top 100 Women in Maryland earning the Circle of Excellence distinction. HCPL was honored by The Daily Record as a 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2017 Innovator of the Year for Little Leapers, pre- and early literacy STEM kits; Little Leapers 3.5; digital media Innovation Lab; and Bel Air Library Children’s Department renovation. Ms. Hastler recently was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation from the Iota Nu Chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., in recognition of outstanding dedication and commitment.  Currently she is active in several local, state, and national associations, boards and committees including:

  • Chair of the Harford County Commission for Women
  • Immediate Past Chair of Maryland Humanities– Governor Appointee
  • United Way of Central Maryland Regional Board
  • Harford County Education Foundation
  • Healthy Harford Board of Directors
  • Harford County Local Management Board

  • Chesapeake Therapeutic Riding Advisory Board
  • American Library Association (ALA)
  • Public Library Association (PLA)
  • Harford County Public Library Board of Trustees
  • Harford County Public Library Foundation Board

Ms. Hastler received a Master of Library Science from the University of Maryland, College Park, College of Library and Information Services, and an undergraduate degree in Business Administration Human Resources from Towson State University, Towson, MD.  In addition, she received a Master of Science in Administration from Central Michigan University. She is a graduate of the Harford Leadership Academy, class of 2003. In April 2019, she completed the University of Georgia, Carl Vinson Institute of Government, Library Financial Management Certificate Program and completed Cornell University’s eCornell Certificate program for Diversity and Inclusion in the fall of 2018.
