The Sgt. Alfred B. Hilton Memorial Fund, Inc., will celebrate the unveiling of the Sgt. Alfred B. Hilton Memorial on November 4, 2022, at 11:00 A.M. at the David Craig Park, 553-599 N Union Avenue, Havre de Grace, MD 21078.

This event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be available to enjoy. Guest speaker for the event is Major General Robert L. Edmonson II, Senior Commander, Aberdeen Proving Ground Commanding General, U.S. Army Communications-Electronics Command.

Sgt. Alfred B. Hilton is the recipient of our nation’s highest military award — the Medal of Honor. Sgt. Hilton is one of 16 Black Union Army Soldiers who received the Medal of Honor for their service during the Civil War.  He is the only service member from Harford County ever to receive such distinction. With this unveiling, the Fund’s mission to preserve his memory and educate the public about his long-overlooked heroism will now expand to focus on a grave marker preservation program which seeks to identify, locate and appropriately mark the graves of United States Colored Troops buried in Harford County.  They will also continue awarding annual scholarships in honor of Sgt. Hilton to students attending Harford Community College.

The generous donations from the community and local businesses have made this unveiling a reality. According to Curtis Beulah, Chairperson for the Foundation, “We are so grateful for the support of our community. Our local and state governments provided significant contributions. This most honorable man will now receive the public recognition fitting his heroism. It will also serve as a reminder of honor to all those who serve. We are extremely honored and proud to share this with our county.”
