Shelter Hosting Virtual Kitten Shower to Recruit Fosters & Collect Supplies

The Humane Society of Harford County (HSHC) will soon be hearing the pitter patter of little paws, so to prepare for kitten season – the time of year when pregnant and nursing cats and orphaned neonatal kittens flood animal shelters across the nation – HSHC is hosting a one-hour Virtual Kitten Shower on Saturday, March 12, 2022 from 10:00-11:00 AM.

On the day of the shower, guests can join at tinyurl.com/JoinKittenShower – or sign up in advance to receive an email reminder with the link at tinyurl.com/KittenShowerSignup. Shelter staff will kick-off the shower with a meow-mosa mocktail toast to all foster parents and donors, and will then give a bottle feeding demonstration with a neonatal kitten. Other activities during the hour include games and a discussion about kitten care and the shelter’s foster program.

“We take in more cats and kittens than any other animal,” said Cat Kelly, HSHC’s shelter operations director. “Neonatal kittens in the first few weeks of their lives are the most vulnerable, so being prepared with supplies and foster parents who are ready and able to take them home makes a huge difference.”

HSHC has a well-established foster care program that places kittens into temporary homes until they reach 8 weeks of age and can go up for adoption. Having trained foster care providers and a pantry well stocked with supplies is part of HSHC’s proactive life-saving strategy. Furthermore, the benefits of becoming a kitten foster parent include a short-term commitment of a few weeks to no more than two months, a boost to your mental health due to the cuteness factor, bonding time for the family, not to mention how great it feels to prepare the kittens for a long and healthy life.

Anyone can help the shelter welcome all the little ones by visiting HSHC’s gift registry at tinyurl.com/HSHCKittens. Items on the list include kitten food, non-clumping kitty litter, powdered kitten milk replacer, and bottles. Gift cards to area pet stores and monetary donations are other ways to help. Donations can be shipped to the shelter at 2208 Connolly Road, Fallston, MD 21047 or dropped off contact free on the following days/times: Monday through Friday from 11am – 6pm; Saturday from 10am – 5pm; and Sundays from noon – 4pm.

All the event details, including links to the shelter’s special kitten wish list, foster application and meow-mosa mocktail recipe – can be accessed by visiting https://www.harfordshelter.org/kittenshower.
