Harford County Water & Sewer has earned two state grants totaling $486,602 for producing cleaner discharge water than required. The grants from Maryland Department of the Environment are for exceptional performance by Harford’s wastewater treatment plants in 2020.

“I would like to thank MDE for this funding, which will help reduce costs for our customers,” County Executive Barry Glassman said. “I am also proud of our team for continuing to go above and beyond state requirements for protecting public health and the environment.”

Harford County Water & Sewer operates two plants, one in Joppatowne and the other at Sod Run in Perryman. Funding for the plants comes from sewer system users, and not from the county’s general tax revenue.

The grants will be used toward expenses for plant operations and maintenance.

Since the start of MDE’s annual performance-based grant program in 2015, Harford County’s wastewater treatment plants have earned grant awards every year, totaling over $2 million.
