The Greater Bel Air Community Foundation Inc. hosted its 20th Annual Golf Classic on Monday, October 4, at the Maryland Golf and Country Club. This year’s event raised almost $90,000 in net profits to support the Greater Bel Air Community. The Golf Classic is the major fundraiser for GBACF, helping with improvements to standing structures and renovations to playgrounds in our community.

During the event, Melynda Velez, founder of LASOS, Inc. (Linking All So That Others Succeed), received the Tom Broumel Award. The annual award is presented to a member of the Harford County community who exemplifies the late Tom Broumel’s enduring service and commitment to the community, to make it a better place to live, work and play. Broumel served the community as Chief of Police for the Town of Bel Air, Chief Deputy of the Harford County Sheriff’s Department and State Fire Marshall. Melynda was also awarded a $5,000 grant for LASOS, Inc., a non-profit organization in Harford County providing critical resources to non-native, English-speaking residents.

The success of the Annual Golf Classic hinges on support from local businesses and donors. According to Paige Boyle, a member of the GBACF Board of Directors, “We are so grateful for the support of our community. The GBACF could not fund capital improvement projects, nor the more recent COVID emergency grants for local non-profits without the contributions of our generous donors.” Since its inception in 1998, the Foundation has funded over $1,000,000 in the creation of or improvement of structures in the county.

Recently the GBACF provided funding to the John Carroll Learning Center and the Town of Bel Air 9-Hole Disc Golf. The extensive list of projects funded by the Foundation can be found at www.gbacf.net.

GBACF was founded in April 1998 by local citizens and business people concerned about the welfare of the families and citizens of Bel Air, the community, its facilities and the Town. The Foundation raises funds for capital improvement projects. The Foundation is a qualified 501(c)(3) corporation. Your tax-deductible gift is encouraged to GBACF, P.O. Box 412, Bel Air, MD 21014.
