Bill Nearhoof is Maryland’s Truck Driver of the Year!
In 44 years as a professional truck driver, Pitt Ohio’s Willard “Bill” Nearhoof III has traveled more than 3.7 million miles without an accident. That is the equivalent of circling the earth 148 times or making 8 round trips to the moon and back!
On February 8, 2021 Willard “Bill” Nearhoof III of Pitt Ohio was selected as Maryland’s 2020 Truck Driver of the Year. Bill is the longest serving employee in the history of Pitt Ohio, having started with the company when it was formed in 1979. He was chosen as the Driver of the Year by the Maryland State Police based on his extraordinary record, which includes:
- 44 years of safe driving, traveling 3.7 million miles.
- Training more than 100 other Pitt Ohio employees in the Smith System driver safety program.
- Actively contributing to charities such as the Maryland Food Bank, Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, and VFW Post 6321.
- Serving in the U.S. Navy Seabees from 1973 to 1979.
Bill first started driving trucks in 1976. He credits his career and his inspiration to the Hammel family who founded Pitt Ohio. Among his most memorable experiences are the many special drivers and other people he has met along the way. Besides driving trucks, Bill enjoys bass fishing on the Susquehanna River and watching the races at the Hagerstown speedway. He resides in Harford County with his wife Kathy.
Mr. Nearhoof was selected from among 12 drivers who were honored as the 2020 Drivers of the Month by Maryland Motor Truck Association. In total, the records of these 12 drivers include 18 million miles of safe travel. Due to COVID restrictions, MMTA was unable to hold its normal celebration banquet, however, each Driver of the Month received an honorary plaque and a commemorative jacket for his or her achievement. Mr. Nearhoof was presented with a special crystal truck at a small gathering at Pitt Ohio’s terminal in Glen Burnie, MD. He also received several citations from the Maryland State Police, Maryland Transportation Authority Police, and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
