Winter blues? Practice Hygge!

When it’s freezing temps outside and you feel the winter blues, what’s a person to do? One idea is to practice Hygge.

Pronounced hue-gah, Hygge is a Danish word that doesn’t exist in the American language. In an attempt to define it, Hygge is the art of creating a nice, cozy atmosphere. It is thick, cozy socks, PJs, candles, a warm fire, a mug of hot chocolate, a slice of cake, soft music. Does that draw up a comforting image? It should!

It is self-care, everyday happiness, creating balance. It is about making your life better by slowing down. The focus is about being present in the moment. That includes putting your cell-phone down and turning off the T.V. Instead, try picking up a book or newspaper. Or perhaps, you want to look through old photographs.

This concept of Scandinavian coziness has made waves across the globe. And for good reason! Denmark is ranked one of the happiest countries in the world. Hygge encourages taking pleasures in the simple things in life. It is about releasing the need for to-do lists, being productive all the time and being on the go. It is well-being in the moment. No wonder the Danish are so happy!

Do the words relaxation, quality, consciously cozy, nice atmosphere, clutter-free surroundings, and happiness sound appealing to you?

If so, here’s how you can practice Hygge:

  • Cook hot, comforting soup and serve it with crusty bread and a simple, side salad.
  • Soak in a bubble bath surrounded by scented candles, relaxing music and enjoy the warmth.
  • Sit by your fireplace wearing cozy socks, PJs, with a fuzzy blanket. 
  • Enjoy a cup of hot chocolate and read your favorite book.

  • Wear clothes you feel really comfortable in.
  • Gather with a small, intimate group of friends and share a delicious meal and great conversation.
  • Enjoy a delicious pastry for breakfast with a hot cup of coffee.
  • Have family game night with lots of laughs and fun!

In essence, find what brings you coziness and do that. Happy Hygge!
