Harford Family House Hosting Eleventh Annual Home Runs for the Homeless

Local businesses to bat for charity; home run derby free for public to attend

Harford Family House is hosting their 11th annual “Home Runs for the Homeless” fundraiser on Monday, July 22 at Leidos Field at Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen. Local businesses in teams of four batters will swing for the fences as the organization raises money to end homelessness for families with children. This family-friendly event is free for members of the general public to attend from 8 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. as teams compete to hit the most home runs.

Over the past 11 years, “Home Runs for the Homeless” has raised more than $280,000, helping to provide housing, resources and support for Harford County’s families with children experiencing homelessness; Harford Mutual Insurance Company has been the event’s “presenting sponsor” since its inception. Now in its 30th anniversary year, Harford Family House has supported more than 600 families, touching the lives of more than 1,900 individuals.

“Home Runs has been a wonderful showcase of our community’s support over the years,” says CEO of Harford Family House, Robin Tomechko. “From our registered teams to our event sponsors, it’s empowering to see our business community rally together to make a difference for those experiencing homelessness in Harford County!”

Batters will enjoy a day of friendly competition, lunch courtesy of Chick-fil-A, the opportunity to win a variety of awards (such as the Georgia Peach, awarded to the female batter with the highest score) and a picnic-themed outdoor dinner reception emceed by Pete Gilbert from WBAL-TV 11 with ballpark fare.

The roster for participating teams is currently full. However, those interested in supporting the cause are invited to create a virtual fundraising team or attend the event to spectate for free. Sponsorships are also available but selling out quickly. Harford Family House is the largest provider of housing for families with children experiencing homelessness in Harford County. Other programs include HUD Supportive Housing for families experiencing homelessness where one family member has a disability, Wheels for Work, providing transportation to and from work while helping families work toward car ownership, and Ready by 21, a program to support unaccompanied young adults ages 18-21 who are involved with the foster care system. Clients are provided with a fully furnished apartment or house and receive case management services and referrals to partner agencies to move them from homelessness and despair to hope and independence.
