Volunteers and visitors donated time and talent to help the residents of the Havre de Grace Housing Authority (HDGHA) in two events held during April.
New partners, new plants and new initiatives are in bloom at the Havre de Grace Housing Authority (HDGHA), thanks to the generous spirit of the Harford County community. Despite rain and chilly temperatures, volunteers came out to visit, help and pledge support for the residents and programs of HDGHA during SomersetServe on April 22 and the Open House and Friend-Raiser on April 25, the two most recent events hosted by the public housing complex.
Held in tandem with Earth Day on April 22, SomersetServe was HDGHA’s annual community beautification project. 40 pairs of helping hands came out for the day and side by side with residents of Somerset Manor, they spread mulch, repainted curbs and speed bumps, planted flowers, raked leaves and generally gave the neighborhood a fresh look. Afterward, the entire group shared lunch.
The Open House and Friend-Raiser on April 25 united even more local volunteers and donors in support of those in need. Guests toured the actual homes of Somerset Manor and learned about the programs and activities offered to those who live there; then met with residents to see what other services could help. The event resulted in commitments of support and new partnerships for HDGHA.
HDGHA Executive Director Nicki Biggs, says, “We are truly blessed to be part of such a generous community where the support of sponsors and dedication of volunteers help us move forward with the mission of HDGHA. Their contributions of time, talent and donations directly impact our residents which has a very positive ripple effect for everyone. The community features 50 rental townhomes and is the only public housing facility in Harford County.
