The first annual Harford Streams Summer Adventure program drew more than 200 participants, and at least one puppy, to explore the natural beauty of Harford County streams this summer. Designed to encourage support for protecting local waterways, the program was initiated in June by the Harford County Dept. of Public Works’ Office of Watershed Protection and Restoration. Registered participants were invited to take selfies at designated stream locations and upload them on the county website to earn a free T-shirt. Those who visited 15 or more sites were eligible to win additional prizes. County citizens of all ages registered for the adventure program, which ran until September 12, 2016.
A total of 205 Harford County residents took part, including 65 participants who visited 10 or more sites to earn a Harford Streams Summer Adventure T-shirt. Forty-four participants visited at least 15 locations and qualified for the drawing to win a pontoon boat trip donated by the Anita C. Leight Estuary Center. Edgewood resident Linda Andrews, whose puppy “Toby” happily tagged along for her adventure, was the prize winner. Twenty-two participants visited 20 locations and were entered in the drawing for a family membership to the National Aquarium, won by the Kepner family of Fallston. Eight Harford County residents went above and beyond by visiting more than the 20 designated locations.
Feedback on the new program was very enthusiastic.
Adam Harrow of Bel Air said, “I’ve lived in Harford County most of my life and was able to see a bunch of places, some of which I had never been before!”
Megan Connors of Edgewood said, “Thank you so much! It’s great doing this as a family!”
Meeting on September 27 with county staff and this year’s prize winners, County Executive Barry Glassman offered his thanks and congratulations:
“I am proud of our Office of Watershed Protection and Restoration for developing this innovative program. By encouraging our citizens to enjoy Harford County’s precious waterways, we are building support for protecting these treasures for future generations. Thanks to all of this year’s participants and congratulations to the winners. We hope to see everyone back again for Summer Adventure 2017!”
