32nd Annual Harford County Academic Tournament Decided by Last Question

On Tuesday, April 26, 2016, seven area schools, including Bel Air High School, C. Milton Wright High School, Edgewood High School, Fallston High School, Havre de Grace High School, John Carroll School and North Harford High School, participated in the 32nd Annual Harford County Academic Tournament. The tournament was held at The University Center in Aberdeen.

In the seven preliminary rounds held throughout the school year, C. Milton Wright High School went undefeated and entered the finals as the number one seed. The other playoff teams were number two seed, John Carroll, with a standing of 4-2; number three seed, Fallston High School, also at 4-2; and number four seed, Bel Air High School, at 3-3.

The tournament was a full-day event attended by the academic teams and their coaches. Coaches served as judges at the tournament, and teams earned points based on the number of questions they answer correct. Questions were knowledge-based questions, with a few application questions that required students to mentally solve equations. During the tournament, three students actively answered questions and rotated throughout the day.

John Carroll defeated Fallston High School in the first semi-final round with a score of 260 to 140. C. Milton Wright High School defeated Bel Air High School in the second semi-final: 250 to 160. The finals between C. Milton Wright High School and John Carroll came down to the last question, which John Carroll correctly answered to win the championship 200 to 190.

The semi-finals and finals of the Harford County Academic Tournament will be broadcast on the Harford Cable Network (HCN) on Friday evenings in June.

The academic teams are a club at the high school level. Students try out to be on the team at the beginning of the school year.
