Participating in a Day of Service to honor Martin Luther King Jr., Harford County government employees volunteered on March 17 to lend a hand at the Edgewood branch of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Harford County. Government employees did yardwork, made bagged lunches, assembled educational STEM kits, and played St. Patrick’s Day games with the children.
Inspired by the national day of service on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, County Executive Barry Glassman authorized a local Day of Service program for county government employees, organized in partnership with United Way of Central Maryland. County employees in the program have also assisted other local nonprofits and volunteered in schools for Read Across America.
As a result of the volunteer activities at the Boys & Girls Club:
- 150 boys and girls received a bagged lunch
- 128 children went home with a STEM kit
- 75 children played St. Patrick’s Day games (and ate a lot of Lucky Charms)
- 175 children will enjoy beautiful landscaping on club grounds
- Two benches were dug out of their cement footings and moved to the children’s play area
