5th Annual Adam Thompson 5K Run/Walk
The 5th Annual Adam Thompson 5K Run/Walk will be held Sunday, April 24, at 8 a.m. at Harford Community College, 401 Thomas Run Road in Bel Air.
The race honors the memory of Adam Thompson, a first-year Harford Community College student who was killed in an automobile accident in 2011. Proceeds from the race will benefit scholarships supporting students attending Harford Community College.
On-site race registration takes place in the Susquehanna Center Auxiliary Gym beginning at 6:30 a.m., with the race starting at 8 a.m. Participants may run as individuals or organize themselves as part of a team.
Prizes will be awarded to the top three men and women finishers as well as to the first to cross the finish line in various age categories. T-shirts will be given to the first 400 registrants, and all participants will receive refreshments after the race.
The cost is $25 per person for advance registration (by midnight on Thursday, April 21) or $35 on the day of the race. Online registration is available in advance at www.harford.edu/adam. For more information, call 443-412-2449.
Various activities will take place before and after the race, including a children’s area plus exhibitors, screenings, music and more. 98 Rock’s Mickey Cucchiella will serve as the MC.
Joining the festivities will be The Oriole Bird, Chesapeake Bayhawks’ cheerleaders and Harford Community College’s Screech the Owl.
Also taking place at the walk will be a raffle. Prizes are a Weber Spirit propane gas grill (donated by Home Depot in Lutherville); sterling silver Jet T’aime charm bracelet (donated by Saxon’s Diamond Centers); and a $100 Visa gift card. Tickets for the raffle are $2 each or three for $5.
The goals for this year’s race are to register 400 participants and to raise $35,000 for scholarships. More than $90,000 has been raised for scholarships over the first four years of the race.
Proceeds from the race benefit the Harford Community College Foundation and The Upper Chesapeake Health Foundation, offering scholarship opportunities to local students and to children of University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Health team members. To date, 77 scholarships have been awarded.
The race is hosted by The Thompson Family, Harford Community College Foundation and The Upper Chesapeake Health Foundation.
“It doesn’t seem possible that we are organizing the fifth annual race in Adam’s memory,” said Pat Thompson, Adam’s mother. “Over the past four years, we have helped more than 77 students with scholarships to Harford Community College. I’m hopeful we can raise at least $35,000 this year to continue to help students financially with their education.”
Advance packet pick-up will be available Friday, April 22, from 3 to 6 p.m. at University of Maryland Harford Memorial Hospital in Havre de Grace and on Saturday, April 23, from 9 to 11 a.m. at University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air.
