Dr. Robert Musil discusses the environmentalist at March 6 event in Jarrettsville
Meet the Author: Dr. Robert K. Musil takes place Sunday, March 6, at 2 p.m. at the Jarrettsville Library.
Dr. Musil will discuss his book, “Rachel Carson and Her Sisters: Extraordinary Women Who Have Shaped America’s Environment.” He serves as president and CEO of the Rachel Carson Council, founded in 1965 by Carson’s friends and colleagues as a legacy organization in her memory.
In his book and research, Dr. Musil explores the role of 19th century women and the impact they had on how society viewed nature, until Rachel Carson. He recounts how Carson was able to use the work of those before her to make a larger and more permanent impact on American society.
Dr. Musil became intrigued by Carson after hearing her vilified by a radio host. “I wanted to know more about the roots of such venom,” he recalled, speaking with Lawrence S. Wittner, a reviewer with the History News Network. Dr. Musil soon “realized that there had been other Rachel Carsons long before she was born and that many women have built on her legacy since her untimely death.”
In addition to leading the Rachel Carson Council, Dr. Musil is a senior fellow and adjunct professor at the Center for Congressional and Presidential Studies, School of Public Affairs, at American University, where he teaches about climate change and American environmental politics.

Meet the Author: Dr. Robert K. Musil is part of the programming of “Peanuts…Naturally,” an exhibition of Charles Schulz’s Peanuts’ comic strips, videos, objects and interactive stations, at the Bel Air and Abingdon libraries, that focus on exploration of the natural world.
