On February 3, 2015, Bel Air High School Biomedical Sciences students partnered with Project Lead the Way (PLTW) and the Association for Career and Technical Education to showcase the extraordinary career and technical education offered at Bel Air High School, a PLTW national model school.
Seniors Hunter Gerard, Morgan Domanico, Ciera Munday, and Kathryn Higinbothom presented to PLTW their emergency room innovation project during a congressional reception at the Russell Senate Office Building. The project features an emergency room floor design created by the program Sketch Up, as well as a mockup of an app.
Students had the opportunity to speak to Senators Tammy Baldwin (WI) and Tim Kaine (VA) about their project and to advocate for continued support and funding for Career and Technical Education.
Bel Air High School alumnus Kyra McPherson (class of 2013) also attended the event and presented her senior project, a bloodwork innovation developed after her experience interning at Johns Hopkins Pediatric Oncology. Miss McPherson’s innovation has since been adopted by Johns Hopkins, saving the hospital time and money. During the event, she discussed the impact the Biomedical Sciences program had on her college education and how it prepared her for advanced level science courses.
Bel Air High School Biomedical Innovations teachers Mr. Michael Burke and Mr. Josh Clemmer accompanied the students to Washington, D.C., as well as Mr. Komondor, Bel Air High School principal and Mrs. Harris, Bel Air High School assistant principal.
Mrs. Harris, the administrator in charge of the Biomedical Sciences program, spoke to several PLTW representatives about the consistent levels of excellence demonstrated by the students and their teachers in the Biomedical Sciences program.
“From classroom projects and labs to STEM elementary camps and outreach, everyone in the program displays a passion for learning and STEM that is inspiring,” said Mrs. Harris.
