(Belcamp, Maryland – August 19, 2014) Harford County Public Library is pleased to announce a stellar line-up of “Meet the Author” guests this fall! Residents will find an author to appeal to every age and interest.
Children’s author Kevin Sherry will be talking about illustrating and writing his new chapter book at the Aberdeen Library on September 13 from 1:00-2:30 pm. This award winning picture book author is reaching out to upper elementary boys with The Yeti Files, a book sure to win them over. Kevin will be showing kids grade 4 and up how to storyboard book ideas and how he creates the pictures to go with the words he has written.
Also on September 13, mystery writer Maggie Barbieri, author of the Murder 101 series, will be at the Jarrettsville Library beginning at 2:00 pm. Enjoy an afternoon of mystery and get the scoop on Once Upon a Lie, the start of her new series.
On September 17 at 6:30 pm, in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month and One Maryland One Book, the Bel Air Library will welcome Baltimore’s neighborhood “folklorist” Raphael Alvarez. Alvarez has written about his beloved city in various forms, from short stories like his newest, Tales from the Holy Land, to television shows like HBO’s The Wire and NBC’s crime dramas Life and The Black Donnellys. A book discussion of Tales from the Holy Land will also be held at the Bel Air Library on September 18.
The Washington Post writer Steve Vogel visits the Fallston Library on September 25 at 6:30 pm to talk about the Battle of Baltimore. Vogel frequently writes about the military and he has turned that expertise towards the past, writing Through the Perilous Fight, about the British invasion of the Chesapeake in 1814.
Aberdeen will be buzzing on October 16 at 6:30 pm as teens “die” over a visit from YA author Maggie Stiefvater, author of The Shiver Trilogy, the gold standard in YA Urban Fantasy. The New York Times bestselling author will spend the evening talking about werewolf nookie, fast cars, dead Welsh kings, and bagpipe music. This is the kick-off to the HCPL Comic-Con which gets rolling on the 17th.
Baltimore teacher Sheri Booker won a 2014 NAACP Image Award for her memoir Nine Years Under: Coming of Age in an Inner City Funeral Home, which takes a look at death – the shocking and the celebratory – through the eyes of a sheltered young black woman. She will share her personal experiences and relate the importance of the funeral home in the African-American community at the Edgewood Library on October 20 at 6:30 pm.
Rose Ihedigbo-Franklin, local author, educator and mother of former Raven’s player James Ihedigbo, presents her book Sandals in the Snow: A True story of one African Family’s Journey to Achieving the American Dream at the Abingdon Library on November 8 at 1:30 pm.
The fall wraps up with a “Charm City Sunday” program. Pulitzer Prize nominated columnist Leah Eskin shares stories from her Chicago Tribune syndicated column “Home on the Range” and her memoir Slices of Life. Leah grew up baking chocolate-chip cookies in Iowa City; managed carrot salad from a closet kitchen at Brown University and attempted Tex-Mex while studying in Paris. The next logical step? Passing on her love of food to thousands of readers each week…and to the Harford County community during this special visit on November 9 at 2:00 pm at the Abingdon Library.
