76 batters competed for the chance to knock one out of the ballpark at Ripken Stadium, all to benefit Harford County’s homeless.

[Bel Air, MD] August 26, 2014—On Wednesday, July 30, Harford Family House hosted its 6th Annual Harford Mutual Home Runs for the Homeless fundraiser at Ripken Stadium and raised more than $18,000 to support homeless families in Harford County.

76 batters made the most of the beautiful weather to participate in the home run derby, getting 15 swings each at home plate to try and hit a home run. But the $250 per person entry fee afforded participants much more: a full day at the ballpark with the opportunity to change in the locker room, take batting practice in the batting cage, sit in the dugout, see their head shots on the giant scoreboard and hear play-by-play commentary as they stepped up to bat.

Mayor Michael Bennett threw the opening pitch and provided the opening remarks at the post-derby award ceremony held in the club level of Ripken Stadium.

While the players were batting, several good-natured civil servants participated in the dunking booth for a good cause, including Councilman Dion Guthrie and Delegate Glen Glass. WAMD’s Tracy Hart also took a turn in the dunking booth.

“What a great day at the ballpark!” says Harford Family House Executive Director Joyce Duffy. “I’d like to thank Harford Mutual and all of our sponsors and participants for making this year’s event fun and enjoyable for all. With your help we were able to raise enough to provide many nights of shelter.”
