Harford County has an attractive new recreational facility for citizens to enjoy following the public opening in late October of the Level Building at Harford County Parks & Rec’s Churchville Recreation Complex.  Named for its proximity to Level Road/MD Route 155, the nearly 24,000 square foot facility features a gym dedicated by County Executive Barry Glassman in memory of Eleanore “Bobbie” Kunkel. The late Mrs. Kunkel was a founding member of the Churchville Rec Council and a tireless, 30-year volunteer for county parks and recreation.

Mrs. Kunkel’s adult children were on hand October 19 for the gym dedication in their mother’s honor. A plaque was unveiled which reads: “This gymnasium is dedicated in honor of Eleanore “Bobbie” Kunkel in recognition of her many years of leadership and volunteer service to the Churchville Recreation Council and the Harford County community.”

The new Eleanore “Bobbie” Kunkel gym has two full basketball courts that can be converted for tennis and volleyball.  Following a request to County Executive Glassman from local pickleball players, striping was also added to accommodate this increasingly popular paddle sport.

The Level Building also includes a fitness center, accessible for only $24 per year, plus a large multi-purpose room with divider, a small meeting room, storage, and office space.

The new building shares a campus with the existing Churchville Recreation Complex building, now called the Glenville Building, which will continue as the home of ACPR Gymnastics. This rec council program continues to grow, serving young gymnasts countywide.

Outdoor ball fields added last year round out the offerings at the Churchville Rec Complex. For more information about programs and facilities, please call 410-638-4345.

“We are very excited to see residents of all ages use this beautiful new facility,” said Kathy Burley, Harford County director of parks & rec. “We invite you to stop in, explore the building, and perhaps even sign up to utilize the brand new fitness center. It’s a bargain for only $24 a year.”

The Harford County Department of Parks & Recreation provides quality of life enhancements for citizens countywide. Working closely with 20 independent recreation councils, the department also maintains and utilizes over 4,430 acres of parkland which hosts some 75 county parks and playgrounds and 28 municipal facilities. For information about programs and facilities near you, please visit the county website www.harfordcountymd.gov.
