Are your loved ones prepared to carry out your wishes in the event of a catastrophic illness or injury? Legal documents such as a financial power of attorney and advanced medical directive can relieve the burden of resolving legal issues during a difficult time.  The Harford County Dept. of Community Services, in partnership with the Harford Bar Foundation, will offer free advice and assistance drafting these important legal documents in “Decisions That Determine Your Destiny”, a new program beginning in May under the administration of County Executive Barry Glassman.

The program for individuals and family members will start with a presentation to demystify the legal process and identify necessary information and factors to consider before drafting a financial power of attorney and/or advanced medical directive.  The Dept. of Community Services Office on Aging will provide a handy checklist folder for all participants.  Presentations will be held from 7 – 8 p.m. as follows:

Wednesday, May 4 at the Fallston Activity Center | 1707 Fallston Road, Fallston

Monday, May 9 at the Havre de Grace Activity Center | 351 Lewis Lane, Havre de Grace

Wednesday, May 18 at the McFaul Activity Center | 525 W. MacPhail Road, Bel Air

At the conclusion of each presentation, participants will be offered the opportunity to return to their activity center at a later date to meet with an attorney who will draft the legal documents, free of charge.  Attorney appointments will be available from 6 – 8 p.m. on June 14 for participants at the Fallston Activity Center, on June 1 at the McFaul Activity Center, and on May 16 in Havre de Grace.

“We see the strain on families seeking help from the Harford County Bar Foundation, which could be avoided if legal documents were prepared in advance,“ said Nancy Mahoney, executive director of the Harford Bar Foundation. “We hope this free program will help bring peace of mind to community members and their families.”
