More than $120,000 has been raised for student scholarships by the Adam Thompson 5K Run/Walk over its first five years.
This year’s race took place Sunday, April 24, at Harford Community College with 400 runners and walkers. The overall male winner of the 5K was Geoffrey Rinehart, who completed the race in 19:58. Elizabeth Roark was the top female runner. She finished in 23:36.
More than $30,000 was raised in 2016 to benefit The Adam Thompson Memorial Nursing Scholarship at Harford Community College and The Adam Thompson Memorial Education Scholarship at University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Health. Both scholarships support students attending Harford Community College. Adam Thompson was a first-year Harford Community College student who was killed in an automobile accident in 2011.
County Executive Barry Glassman provided pre-race remarks. The race was started at 8 a.m. by Dr. Pat Thompson, Adam’s mother. 98 Rock’s Mickey Cucchiella served as MC for the post-race awards ceremony.
Many activities took place before and after the race. They included a children’s area plus exhibitors, screenings, music and more. The morning also included appearances by The Oriole Bird, Chesapeake Bayhawks’ cheerleaders and Harford Community College’s Screech.
In addition, various rescue and police vehicles were on display. PHI Air Medical landed a helicopter on the APG Federal Credit Union Arena parking lot and participants had the opportunity to take a close-up look. University of Maryland Express Care brought an ambulance; Aberdeen Police Department, a street modified police cruiser; and Havre de Grace Police Department gave a K-9 unit demonstration.
The race was hosted by The Thompson Family, Harford Community College Foundation and The Upper Chesapeake Health Foundation.
“We are so fortunate to have raised more than $120,000 in five years for scholarships to help students pursue their education ,” said Dr. Pat Thompson, Adam’s mother, a nursing instructor at Harford Community College for the past nine years and a team member at University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Health for more than 30 years. “Adam would be very proud of how the community has come together to raise funds for such a good use.”
