Relive high school memories and make new ones at The PROM, a charity event to benefit the nonprofit Greater Excellence in Education Foundation. The event is open to those 21 and older and will be held April 2 from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. Every year, attendance at the event has grown, so to accommodate more guests, organizers moved this year’s event to the Bel Air Armory on Main Street.

All proceeds from The PROM will enable Greater Excellence in Education Foundation to continue to provide scholarships, classroom grants, innovative youth-centered programs, educational tools and free school supplies through the Tools for Schools Resource Center.

In addition to a new location, guests will find other new touches at this year’s event including a signature drink, “The Graduate,” awaiting them upon check-in. Guests will also enjoy a dinner prepared by Pairings Bistro that highlights local farms, a complimentary bar supported by Jim’s Bottleworks, a silent auction, a wine pull by Midway Liquors, and live musical entertainment from the classic dance band Appaloosa. Suggested dress for the evening is prom attire, whether retro or contemporary. And since no prom would be complete without a prom court, the evening will also include the crowning of a King and Queen selected for their fundraising efforts.

Last year’s King and Queen—Rick Ayers, Harford County Department of Emergency Services, and Monica Worrell, Advanced Eye Care—will emcee the crowning ceremony at this year’s event.

Members of The PROM Court include the following local business executives and community leaders: Melissa Blessing, Harford County Department of Emergency Services; Jenn Sproul, Prime AE Group; Dr. Jason Sober, Advanced Eye Care; Dave Rosas, Oak Contracting, LLC; Diane Moore, HAR-CO Credit Union; and Pamela Overbay, Harford Community Action Agency. Donations to the Prom Court’s individual fundraising efforts can be made online at https://www.crowdrise.com/2016TheProm.

“As a past Greater Excellence in Education Foundation Queen, I saw each dollar I raised as the face of a real child, in my own Harford County community, who lacked simple education tools that could fuel that child’s greater success,” said Tina Mike, Queen of the organization’s 2014 Mardi Gras. “Those faces spurred me on to a Greater Excellence in Education Foundation coronation, which for me was a fun, wonderful and heartfelt experience. I saw firsthand the generosity of a community that truly cares for its students and is willing to make a difference in their lives.”

Warren Hamilton, Board Chair of Greater Excellence in Education Foundation, agrees, saying it’s vital for the community and area businesses to support the event. He explains, “The Prom is an evening of fun, but it’s also Greater Excellence in Education Foundation’s biggest annual event, raising awareness of the foundation’s good work as well as the funds necessary for us to provide support for initiatives and programs that allow all Harford County Public School students to achieve at their highest potential, regardless of socio-economic environment. Without partners like Oak Contracting, LLC, this year’s Senior Class sponsor, we wouldn’t be able to continue to make the difference we have over the years.”

From 2007-2015, Greater Excellence in Education Foundation has awarded $106,000 in scholarships to area students. The organization has also supplied thousands of books and homework tool kits for all primary school grade levels, as well as delivering boxes of school supplies for teachers to every Title I school in the county each year. Greater Excellence in Education Foundation school supplies donated in 2015 alone totaled $18,000, and exceed $68,000 since its inception.

In addition to scholarships, classroom and school supplies, Greater Excellence in Education Foundation offers other valuable resources for the county’s 37,000 students, including middle school and high school leadership programs and the Books in Hand Program to support improved reading skills and home learning materials.  The innovative Connect to A Classroom gives businesses in the community the opportunity to directly donate funds toward an innovative classroom project or need, and has helped Greater Excellence in Education Foundation award $50,000 in classroom grants over the years.

Limited tickets for The PROM are still available for $90 each and can be purchased online at www.geefinc.com/events/thepromSponsorship and advertising opportunities are also available.
