BELCAMP, Md. (June 18, 2014)– Walmart joined with the Harford County Public Library on Monday to kick off the library’s 2014 Summer Reading Program. Walmart announced earlier this year that it would become a significant sponsor of this special Harford County program, donating $3,000 to the program’s participants.

More than 16,000 babies, children and teens are anticipated to participate in this year’s reading program, Fizz Boom READ! Registration at all 11 library branches begins today with a vast array of kick-off activities, including guest appearances by Tales, the library mascot; Ferrous, the Aberdeen Iron-Birds’ mascot; and local scientists who will perform hands-on experiments at the Aberdeen and Bel Air libraries. The Harford County Public Library Summer Reading Program runs through August 16th.

“Walmart is committed to giving back to the communities we live and work in, and we are thrilled to be lending support to this special Harford County cause,” said Nina Albert, Director of Community Affairs for Walmart. “Initiatives like the Harford County Summer Reading Program are essential to inspiring creativity in young people and represent the ongoing contribution the Harford County Public Library makes to the community.”

Walmart continues to make a pledge to give in the communities in which it operates. In fiscal year ending 2013, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation provided more than $7 million in cash and in-kind donations to local organizations throughout Maryland. Including the additional funds raised by customers and associates, Walmart contributed more than $8.4 million to such organizations in the State of Maryland.
